Becoming a Scholar in Carribean History

As a result of my genealogy research, I have become fascinated with Carribean History, especially the migration patterns in Puerto Rico in the 1800s.  Most possibly because I haven’t seen or read anything on the topic.

I am interested as to why my family has stayed in their village of Rincon for at least 6+ generations.
Who left and why did others stay and more importantly why did others migrate to the region?

I am hoping getting into a Latin American/Carribean Studies program would provide the structure and support to do this research well and publish my findings.  I think of it as a history project for my home town.

Discovered these links to inspire me to this journey.
